Lester Young's music was like his life - filled with glamour and darkness. Martin Gayford celebrates the tenor-sax legend. Watch Lester Young serenade Billie Holiday The great tenor saxophonist Lester Young, otherwise known as Prez, could be said to be the person who invented cool - not only as a musical concept, but also as a way of life.

Young is credited with being the first person to use "bread" as an expression meaning money, and - probably - to employ "cool" itself as a term of approval in which case he has left a mark not just on music but also on the vocabulary of every teenager in Britain today. Photographs from the late '30s show him wearing dark glasses in a nightclub situated in a cellar on New York's 52nd St - another cultural first, I suspect. The figure of Young as he appears in the film Jammin' the Blues - drifting through a dreamily beautiful blues, surrounded by shadows and whorls of smoke, a cigarette between his fingers as he plays, his face impassive and withdrawn - is emblematic of a now vanished way of life: glamorous, doomed, deeply unhealthy.

In every way a fascinating figure, as well as a supremely gifted musician, Young is the subject of Being Prez Equinox , an exemplary new study by Dave Gelly. Young's life was sad, even tragic. He lived for music, and you might say also died for it. The buoyancy and apparently unlimited inspiration of his early performances faded quite quickly it was already doing so that day in into something much more wistful and weary. In the last decade of his life, you can hear him falling apart, often unable to negotiate faster tempi, sometimes scarcely able to play at all.

It would be simply a melancholy tale of decline, but for one thing. As the bass player Dave Green once remarked, great jazz musicians don't just play tunes, they play their whole lives. Of none was this truer than Prez, so that almost until the end - he died of alcoholism, malnutrition and cirrhosis, among other complaints - his solos can have a gaunt but piercing beauty.

It came from the fact that, as Gelly notes, he always told the truth. Nonetheless, his most wonderful music on the whole came early, and, sadly from the point of posterity, a large amount of it went unrecorded.

As luck had it, he didn't made a disc until , when he was already So we have, for example, none of his alto saxophone playing, though Benny Carter, himself a supreme altoist, once told me that he had never heard the instrument sound more eloquent. Nor is there evidence of the sheer fertility of his improvisation, which so struck his contemporaries.

He would, apparently, improvise on the same theme for an hour. And, as Billie Holiday put it, "his last chorus was prettier than his first". But his surviving solos from the '30s last a minute or two at most. Even so, his music on old records with Count Basie and Holiday have the quality of eternal freshness. Seventy years later, it still bounds out at you, blithe, beautiful, with, as Holiday put it, "those notes that just flip you with surprise".

It was Billie who christened him "Prez" for "President' of all saxophonists". His music of that period inspired a generation of younger players, and not just tenor saxophonists such as Stan Getz. The year-old Charlie Parker learned Lester Young solos note for note. The reverse of his musical hypersensitivity was personal fragility.

You could, Holiday recalled, "hurt his feelings in two seconds". And he required specialised conditions to thrive. He found them in the Basie band - sympathetic friends and compatible musicians. But he left that nest on the ill-omened Friday the 13th, , and, as he much later confessed, he never really made it on his own. For an individual as thin-skinned as he was - and especially an African-American in that era of open prejudice - the world was full of threats and slights.

He had a phrase he used when he detected racism in the air, "I feel a draft", and another for when he spotted the kind of person who put him in an army detention barracks in - guilty of drinking, smoking marijuana and profound unsuitability for the armed services - "Von Hangman is here".

In fact, he had an almost complete private language. The pianist Jimmy Rowles told me that when he played with Prez in LA in , it took weeks before he could understand a word he said. Obviously, the dark glasses, the private language, the clothes he wore - and probably the drink and drugs - were defences against the world with which he couldn't cope.

The novelist James Jones, who ran into him in Paris towards the end, described his air of "princely helplessness". But, despite it all, he didn't give up. On his death bed, he seemed to be trying to form notes, as if playing his instrument. As Billie Holiday put it, "Lester sings in his horn; you listen to him and can almost hear the words".
