The woman in red subtitles

Legible, maybe, but still visually dull and lifeless. Alice Rawsthorn puts it bluntly in her critique of the standard subtitle:. Subtitles are almost always badly designed. Every other area of movie aesthetics has a proud design history, except subtitling.

When a trained assassin can't hit his own backside with a banjo with several shots but the guy that does the office job can take the perfect shot with one bullet all credibility gets thrown out of the window.

Cillian Murphy is always good value in everything he does. He does menacing better than anyone and the ease in which he switches from charmer to monster is scary. The line between the two is so ambiguous in this character which would have made for unsettling viewing had it not been for the preposterous plot.

Rachel McAdams performs her role adequately. To start with she's presented as an average hotel employee but as the film develops she starts to behave more courageously and possibly in even a reckless way not unlike the John McClane character of the Die Hard franchise.

As with John McClane it's not very believable but it's a fun ride. By the end of the film you wouldn't have been surpised if she suddenly pulled out some mixed martial arts moves or pulled out a hidden Uzi 9mm. The film definitely has you rooting for her by the end when the tension is ramped up a few notches. It's just a shame the script has her doing some very heroic things but ask her to do the simple things, things that would require simple common sense, and her character starts to break down.

Had she been able to master the simple things we could have had an intelligent thriller but it didn't reach those heights.

I suspect the film maker wasn't reaching that high to start with. Overall, it was entertaining. I laughed in several places. There are a few tongue in cheek moments. Was this intentional or just a bad script?

You decide. Just don't think too hard about the plot and the character development as there are holes all over the place. It was fun to watch and I never got bored but it won't live long in the memory.

I first saw this film a few years ago and watched it again on Amazon the other day. It is a very nicely written, well directed taught action thriller. Rachel McAdams is our plucky heroine who is targeted by villainous Cillian Murphy to help with a terrorist plot to kill a US senator thanks to her job at a luxury Miami hotel. Murphy forces her to help out by threatening her dad, Brian Cox who flops around in a scruffy sweatshirt the whole time!

The bulk of the film takes place on the red eye flight and the setting helps keep the tension high. Jayma Mays adds the comedic edge as McAdams' colleague at the end of the phone line, while McAdams and Murphy are stuck in a battle of wills.

Things get pretty silly by the end when it's all a frantic chase around a house, and Murphy goes full on nuts. Still, it's a fun ride with good performances from plucky McAdams and menacing Murphy. Yes, they are both very pretty to look at too! Seldom have I enjoyed a film as much as this one. The story is straight foreward enough: A politician is to be assassinated.

A young woman can arrange for him to be in the right place at the right time without causing suspicion. A young man has the job to convince her to do so. What makes the film work so well is the way it's set up. Lisa Rachel McAdams boards her delayed flight and finds she is seated beside the attractive young businessman Jackson Cillian Murphy with whom she has already had a drink in the airport bar.

And just when you're ready for a romance to blossom between the two, he reveals himself as the devious criminal he really is and makes his demands, threatening her father will die if she doesn't do as she is told. What unfolds is a deadly game of cat and mouse between two desperate people, who look to all around them like a young couple having a minor quibble. The performances of the two leads are outstanding.

Rachel McAdams finds just the right balance between fear and distress on the one hand and courage and intelligence on the other to make her character believable and relatable. Cillian Murphy is superb as the villain of the piece. So charming is he throughout that one can't help but root for him.

The supporting cast is equally good. The minor characters are highly entertaining and add a welcome touch of quirky comedy. There is the serious 11 year old girl who manages to freak out Murphy's character, the nice old lady who travels in combat boots, the cougar who tries a little too hard to catch the eye of the attractive young villain who has to keep up appearances but can't afford to take his eyes off his hostage for one moment.

Most fun of all is the complaining lady in the hotel who opens and closes the film, and who is played, apparently, by a marketing executive. Well, I hope somebody gave her more work in front of the camera, because she is pure comedic gold! She makes you walk away from this film with a chuckle. And that's never a bad thing. Full marks also for director Wes Craven who wasn't afraid to tighten the plot and be left with a rather shorter than average film of well under 90 minutes.

Possibly this has something to do with the apparently all important 13 PG rating which may also have been a reason that scenes of gore and violence were either never filmed or ended up on the floor in the cutting room. The sparing use of blood and violence is more than made up for by moments of supreme suspense, expertly created by the master of horror Mr. Craven is. The DVD includes several extra features, among them a short making of featurette, a gag reel and a feature length commentary.

Well worth owning, especially if you're a fan of either of the two leads. A conscientious hotel Manager is taking a flight home and meets a charming stranger in the terminal. They part, but when boarding she finds the stranger is seated next to her. While initially pleased with the situation, she quickly finds out the whole situation has been planned and she is now in the middle of a terrorist plot, with her father's life threatened if she doesn't assist the man.

I was very impressed with this film - great acting, excellent pacing and direction, a believable story and the initially trapped female lead turning the tables in the end. And when you think the film might end, it takes off again, ramping up the action another notch. Well made and great entertainment value. See all reviews from the United Kingdom. There is an abundance of titles in the anime category with new episodes available every week, but there are also seamlessly crafted documentaries, heart-tugging dramas and guilty pleasure reality TV shows that are just as worthy of your attention. Here are the best Japanese series and movies available with English subtitles on Netflix right now. With dialogue both in English and Japanese, this eight-part series weaves a riveting tale of deceit, corruption and brotherhood. Although many risks were taken to produce this ambitious intercontinental show, its razor-sharp script, slow burning tension and host of compelling characters create a deeply satisfying performance. Synopsis: Kaoru, an office worker in her thirties, lives with her pet chick and two bears.

It was a seismic night for fans of foreign films in the United States, where moviegoers have historically preferred their popular films in English. And it left some wondering: Are those one-inch-tall subtitles still a barrier? Over the same period, as streaming services have replaced network and cable television, subtitles have also gained a stronger toehold on smaller screens, from cellphones to TV sets.

Subtitles as visual art

Closed captioning CC and subtitling are both processes of displaying text on a television , video screen , or other visual display to provide additional or interpretive information. Both are typically used as a transcription of the audio portion of a program as it occurs either verbatim or in edited form , sometimes including descriptions of non-speech elements. Other uses have included providing a textual alternative language translation of a presentation's primary audio language that is usually burned-in or "open" to the video and unselectable. HTML5 defines subtitles as a "transcription or translation of the dialogue when sound is available but not understood" by the viewer for example, dialogue in a foreign language and captions as a "transcription or translation of the dialogue, sound effects, relevant musical cues, and other relevant audio information when sound is unavailable or not clearly audible" for example, when audio is muted or the viewer is deaf or hard of hearing. The term "closed" versus "open" indicates that the captions are not visible until activated by the viewer, usually via the remote control or menu option. On the other hand, "open", "burned-in", "baked on", "hard-coded", or simply "hard" captions are visible to all viewers. In the United States and Canada, the terms subtitles and captions have different meanings. Subtitles assume the viewer can hear but cannot understand the language or accent, or the speech is not entirely clear, so they transcribe only dialogue and some on-screen text. Captions aim to describe to the deaf and hard of hearing all significant audio content — spoken dialogue and non-speech information such as the identity of speakers and, occasionally, their manner of speaking — along with any significant music or sound effects using words or symbols. The United Kingdom , Ireland , and most other countries do not distinguish between subtitles and closed captions and use "subtitles" as the general term.
