A story that reveals what it really takes to weather life's storms. Girl with the Crooked Smile is a riveting tale of survival sprinkled with true wit-a la Erma Bombeck meets potty-mouthed Joan Rivers-intertwined with self-discovery, love, tragedy and the unbreakable will to survive it all.

Darah takes readers on an intense and moving journey that begins with her diagnosis of a brain tumor. At the time pregnant with the fourth of her five children and living in Latin America, she undergoes surgery that steals the hearing in one ear and leaves her face deformed. But those concerns quickly take a backseat to dealing with the hardships that follow: a suicide, an armed robbery, a gruesome accident and a business collapse that leaves her family penniless.

Zeledon confronts reality with courage as she fights to keep her sanity and, along the way, finds the strength to share her newfound insights. Named for Darah's late brother, these after school programs teach teens and college students leadership, problem-solving skills and life coping tools in a relaxed, nonjudgmental environment. Review What's refreshing about Girl with the Crooked Smile is that Darah doesn't just address suicide loss. She faces a range of trials and tribulations, and doesn't always handle it perfectly. It's a process, and she learns that she luckily receives many 2nd chances. At the end of each chapter, she shares the lessons she learned by reflecting on the coping skills she used in each crisis.

It was utterly enjoyable to get to know the GWCS the title is reflective of 2 injuries that permanently changed her appearance. It was painful and yet funny. There was none of the "poor me" syndrome about it; it was more like Darah telling us to come with her on her journey and experience everything for ourselves. And boy did she manage to draw you in to the extent that you felt as if you were there. No reader will be able to put this book down - you will laugh, you will cry, you will experience the pain and the joy that Darah and her family went through.

And you will be glad you did. I read this book in four hours flat. Her strength, faith and attitude to persevere in the most trying of circumstances jumps off the page and into your soul. I was intrigued and glued to the pages by her resolve to keep going and wanted to know what propelled her to do so.

Darah's book is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming and it was a joy to get this intimate look into her life. You will find the pearls of wisdom that encapsulate each chapter incredibly inspiring--a true lesson of maturity from a very grateful author. They shine, because we get to feel what forged them. I have poured my heart and soul into this book--oftentimes to the blatant disregard of all else--and have exposed my darkest, most discombobulated thoughts because I wholeheartedly believe the higher purpose is that important.

If you take anything away from reading this book, I hope it is this: In this life there is no choice but to confront adversity head-on with courage, confident that eventually, time will march you out of it.

Who knows? As counterintuitive as it seems, we must find comfort in the uncertainty, in the unknowable. And as we develop the coping skills necessary to trump through our toughest moments, we find ourselves stronger, wiser and more resilient.

Yet, I most fervently believe that the Pearls of Wisdom I share here will offer hope and inspiration to most anyone, from any walk of life, going through a rough stint. I want to make you laugh, make you cry, make you feel. And most of all, empower you to live your life--the good, the bad and the ugly--with the passion and spirit of a warrior. Find that proverbial life raft--that friend, that special place, that creative outlet, whatever brings you light--and take hold.

There is always the promise of a better tomorrow. Keep pressing on. You don't know what you're made of until you are ripped apart. Darah Zeledon has gone through a string of crises and tragedies over the last decade and has still managed to raise five healthy and happy little kids and maintain a good marriage. Instead of curling up in a ball and hiding under the covers, she dealt with one kick in the stomach a brain tumor while pregnant after another Loss of a sibling after another financial setback by fighting back.

She not only honestly and frankly tells about her journey in an easy to read, enthralling manner, she gives little "pearls of wisdom" about how to get through crises in your own life. I'm definitely recommending this to a friend who is going through a major health crisis right now and would suggest you do the same. Even if you are not going through a major event, this book will inspire you to live your best life and not wallow. One person found this helpful. It is hard to believe you are not reading fiction while turning the pages of Ms.

Zeledon's book. What the author endured and conquered is unheard of, though her ability to describe with gut-wrenching honesty and detail is nothing short of inspirational.

This memoir encapsulates one woman's visceral reactions to life's toughest punches. Darah is candid and frank,as well as mighty and strong though she boasts to be a mere 5 feet 1 inches tall. Her love for her family and will to survive bounces off the page.

I read the book in 24 hours. It was that beautifully written. I highly recommend this book for reading groups and anyone who has questioned their ability to fight adversity. Darah gives you the pearls of wisdom for both. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. I can take the next thing that comes along. I instantly fell in love with her irreverence and Joie de Vivre. Zeledon, in fact, had a huge brain tumor.

And she was pregnant. And that was jus the beginning. Zeledon has only just begun to deal with one obstacle with which she will come face to face over the next six years. Time after time she draws on reserves of strength and courage that I began to think were bottomless.

But it was a bicycling accident that brought the author almost to her knees. But she also knows when and how to bend, to go with the flo, to ask for and receive help. Thank you Darah, for writing this book, for being the warrior mom, for being willing to reveal so much of yourself to the world.

Your honesty, your physical strength and endurance, your moments of vulnerability will surely provide inspiration to those who need it. The most important words in the entire book are in the prefatory materials. Ending your life is no solution. This book was written by someone I happen to know as well as love and respect highly. I have several people in my life who have written books before But this one really grabbed me in.

Darah writes from the heart

Ebony Williams grew up in Anchorage Alaska. Her father is from Philadelphia and her mother is from Carenage Trinidad.

I'm on my way, on my way, on my way down On my way, on my way, on my way down You're the one that was trying to keep me way down But like the sun know you know I found my way back round. They tell me I should fix my grill cause I got money now I ain't gon' sit around and front like I ain't thought about it A perfect smile is more appealing but it's funny how My shit is crooked look at how far I done got without it I keep my twisted grill, just to show them kids it's real We ain't picture perfect but we worth the picture still I got smart, I got rich, and I got bitches still And they all look like my eyebrows: thick as hell Love yourself, girl, or nobody will Oh, you a woman? I don't know how you deal With all the pressure to look impressive and go out in heels I feel for you Killing yourself to find a man that'll kill for you You wake up, put makeup on Stare in the mirror but its clear that you can't face what's wrong No need to fix what God already put his paint brush on Your roommate yelling, "Why you gotta take so long? To all the women with the flaws, know it's hard my darling You wonder why you're lonely and your man's not calling You keep falling victim cause you're insecure And when I tell you that you're beautiful you can't be sure 'Cause he don't seem to want you back And it got you asking So all you see is what you lacking Not what you packing Take it from a man that loves what you got And baby girl you're a star, don't let 'em tell you you're not Now is it real?
